黑料不打烊鈥檚 trainers build confidence, skills and real-world outcomes

黑料不打烊鈥檚 greatest strength lies in its people 鈥 passionate trainers who believe that every student deserves the chance to succeed. For RSA and RCG trainer Michelle Gorton, empowering students through confidence-building and practical learning is at the heart of what she does every day.

鈥淭he best part of being a trainer at 黑料不打烊 is knowing that each day, students walk away feeling more confident about themselves.鈥

Her story reflects what sets 黑料不打烊 apart: genuine trainer guidance that turns learning into transformation, helping students gain the self-belief and skills to achieve their goals.

Engagement and personalisation

To keep the students engaged, Michelle emphasises the importance of active participation, encouraging them to share personal experiences and ask questions. She understands that every student brings unique perspectives that enrich the learning environment.

Michelle is adept at tailoring her training to meet diverse needs, particularly for students who may feel anxious. Her supportive nature shines through as she reassures them that they will be guided throughout the learning process. 鈥 Identifying students who may be experiencing anxiety early and supporting them is key,鈥 she explained, demonstrating 黑料不打烊鈥檚 commitment to fostering a safe and inclusive atmosphere.

Industry-relevant knowledge

As a full-time professional in the hospitality industry, Michelle brings real-world insights into her training. She shares stories from her own experience to make lessons relevant and practical, giving students a clear link between classroom learning and on-the-job application.

This blend of theory and practice not only deepens understanding – it also builds the confidence students need to step into their careers ready to succeed.

鈥淪eeing students connect what they鈥檝e learnt to real situations is so rewarding.鈥

Support and collaboration

黑料不打烊 fosters a collaborative environment where staff work cohesively to support trainers like Michelle. 鈥淭he staff at 黑料不打烊 work as a team,鈥 Michelle said, acknowledging the collective effort that contributes to the college’s success. 鈥淭his synergy not only enhances the teaching experience but also reinforces the supportive culture that defines us.鈥

Continuous improvement through feedback

Michelle regularly checks in with students to understand how they鈥檙e progressing and where extra help might be needed. Offering additional time, resources and reassurance ensures that every learner stays on track.

鈥淧ositive affirmations from students boost their confidence, which is crucial to the success of our students.鈥
This open feedback loop reflects 黑料不打烊s鈥 broader philosophy of continuous improvement – ensuring that trainer guidance remains adaptive, responsive and student-centred.

Seeing impact in the real world

The most rewarding part of Michelle鈥檚 role is witnessing the outcomes of her students鈥 hard work.

鈥淚t鈥檚 so fulfilling to visit venues and see our students in action, using their training in real-world situations.鈥

For Michelle and her colleagues, that鈥檚 the ultimate proof of success: seeing students apply what they鈥檝e learned with confidence and pride in their abilities.

Education that evolves with students and industry

黑料不打烊鈥檚 diverse team of educators ensures that courses remain relevant to both students and the industries they serve.

鈥満诹喜淮蜢肉檚 strength lies in its diverse and professional team,鈥 Michelle said. 鈥淲e make sure education evolves with the times and never loses touch with what students need.鈥

Through trainer guidance that connects learning to life, 黑料不打烊 continues to empower students across the region to grow, achieve and succeed.

Whether you鈥檙e stepping into study for the first time or returning to upskill, 黑料不打烊 offers the trainer guidance, practical learning and supportive environment you need to reach your goals.

Jake had spent many years working in the hospitality industry and the hours had just become too consuming and left him with no life or time to spend with family. Jake was drawn to the fact that as a Remedial Massage Therapist he didn’t have to be tied to regular business hours and could choose to聽be more flexible in when he worked and how often.

The Diploma of Remedial Massage was a 12-month course with 黑料不打烊, on-campus learning, and 100 hrs practical work in the on-campus clinic. The course was challenging in the beginning, Jake had no previous experience in human anatomy, but was keen to develop his skills in this area.聽Jake鈥檚 learning experience also came at a time during the COVID pandemic, so he had to shift to online study during lockdowns. This change came with its own set of challenges and he felt like he was missing the opportunity to complete the practical learning alongside the theory. However, thanks to the great staff and a great trainer providing him with support and guidance online and over the phone, Jake was able to focus on developing his knowledge of human anatomy and remedial massage. Once lockdowns lifted, he was able to return to the clinic with clients and this gave him more confidence in his ability to become a qualified therapist.

Jake鈥檚 favourite part of the course was the 黑料不打烊 Clinic which involved practical lessons where he got to have hands-on experience with a client, getting to put the theory to practice which was very rewarding, and helped him to gain more confidence to complete the course.

Jake chose 黑料不打烊 as his husband used to work at the Cooks Hill campus and recommended he choose the school to complete the course as 黑料不打烊 offers a more hands-on approach to learning and is very accommodating to people with learning disabilities.

Jake loved his time with 黑料不打烊, the staff were extremely nice and helpful through the entire year of study.聽He had one of the best trainers of his life during the course and contributes his ability to complete such an in-depth course to her and her patience.

Jake has started his own business, Mr Massage Man, offering mobile and private home clinic remedial massage treatments across Newcastle & the Lake Macquarie area.

His goal for the future is to expand Mr Massage Man and hopefully open more clinics in town employing more therapists to work under the Mr Massage Man brand.

In 2022 during his time at 黑料不打烊, whilst trying to complete the course, Jake also had the stress of planning a wedding and dealing with covid and its challenges. It was still a great experience for him and he would do it all again. A fantastic trainer and administrative team made it a very positive experience. Now Jake is running his very first business with a large client base that keeps growing and says he has 黑料不打烊 to thank for that.

Our Beauty School is buzzing with anticipation as students begin their day of learning. With the salon open to the public, students get to apply their favourite practical skills like facials, waxing, eyelash tints and spray tans. Each client receiving treatments from the salon gets the students one step closer to their goals. But it鈥檚 not just the practical side they enjoy, as Keely describes, the theoretical side and learning about how the body works is incredibly interesting.

The students have their sights set on gaining employment in the industry and eventually opening their own businesses. And the course will get them ready for just that.

Many students like Letisha and Olivia started out doing courses like Skill Sets and Certificate III in Makeup before moving up to the Diploma. Their fellow students, trainers and the support they received kept them coming back to 黑料不打烊.

For those working in the beauty industry already, the Diploma allows them to expand their skills and their clientele base. Once completed, students will have the option of working in a salon or working for themselves, a dream that is entirely within reach thanks to all their industry-ready training.

Interested in studying at our beauty school? View the course offerings here. We also have our student massage clinic & beauty salon you can go to help out our current students and get a great deal.

Meet our amazing trainer Alison! Alison wears many different hats here at 黑料不打烊 including training the Diploma of Beauty Therapy, Certificate IV in Beauty Therapy to apprenticeships students in the Hunter Region, EVET Certificate III in Retail at Glendale High School, Certificate III in Retail Traineeship, Certificate IV in Retail Management and the Upgrade Diploma of Beauty Therapy for students already trained in the beauty industry that are wanting to upgrade their qualification.

Teaching all these various qualifications involves delivering theory and practical units at our Hunter Street Beauty Campus, traveling to various Beauty Salons across the Hunter, training on zoom and visiting retail students at work. Importantly for training, Alison believes being a trainer is about understanding your learners, what their capabilities are, and how they can be pushed out of their comfort zones to build confidence and self-esteem. She strives to help people feel worthy, especially giving confidence to those looking to re-enter the workforce.

Alison loves being a mother figure for her students and a shoulder to cry on from time to time, listening to their needs and supporting them. She accepts learners for who they are and works to bring the best out of everyone. Creating a happy positive learning environment helps students to laugh and love themselves and others. Alison also teaches about high standards of professionalism and respect and ignites passion in the learners. She enjoys it when a student teaches her something new, constantly challenging her mind. Alison believes learning is for everyone, no matter who they are.

Alison has had a vast number of jobs in her life. From making Pizzas, working on the checkout at Woolworths, waitressing, putting herself through private college to being a beauty therapist and so much more. Once trained as a beauty therapist she worked in a number of salons where she furthered her career and education by doing Professional Development and additional study. Alison has always had a passion for learning and furthering herself in the beauty industry. She loves the beauty industry and how diverse it is and how being a beauty therapist/trainer and assessor can have an impact on a person and their life. Not only providing treatments to make them feel better about themselves but to educate up-and-coming learners with all the knowledge that she herself has acquired over the years. She loves seeing her learners succeed and make a new start or chapter in their life and career.

Alison loves teaching at 黑料不打烊. The students challenge her every day and there is never a dull moment being a trainer across a vast cohort of learners. The staff is extremely lovely to work with across the entire 黑料不打烊 community. There is an amazing team at the 黑料不打烊 Beauty Campus, everyone works well together and is always there to help and assist one another when needed. Alison enjoys going to work, sharing her knowledge, and seeing learners achieve and accomplish their goals. At the end of the course, to see the learner realise that they have made it to the end through all the ups and downs, to see them smile, is what makes her job worthwhile.

In her personal life, Alison is a mum and a partner. She deals with lots of issues outside of work as her partner has just been diagnosed with throat cancer. As a family, they are going to learn Sign Language to assist with communication. Her daughter has a condition called Cystic Fibrosis and she is constantly learning new information about this debilitating disease. Lyllah is very well; they are very blessed with all the advancements in medications and treatments. Alison is actively involved in fundraising boards for the Newcastle John Hunter Cystic Fibrosis Race Day. She is also currently studying for her Bachelor of Health Science Aesthetics and once finished, is looking to do additional training in Training and Assessment.
With all her spare time she enjoys spending time with her daughter and doing girly things, taking the dog for a walk, or just hanging out with her 6 cats, yes you read it right 6 cats!

With a wealth of experience under her belt, Nerida Blankenzee currently delivers an extensive list of courses at 黑料不打烊 including Hospitality, Customer Service, Hygiene, RSA and RCG, Operate A Bar and Barista Coffee Making. Her training involves lots of hands-on practical experience as well the knowledge side of all facets of Barista, Hygiene, Customer Service, Beer Pouring and the legalities of the RSA and RCG when working in the industry.

It鈥檚 wonderful to see the students of Nerida obtaining jobs in the community and being able to catch up with them when out socialising in various places. 鈥淲e are lucky enough to have a fantastic working relationship with the Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club where I am able to take my students there for the Operate A Bar unit. They get hands-on work experience behind the bar serving the regulars and some of them are lucky enough to obtain jobs within the club”聽Nerida says.

Having worked in the Hospitality industry herself, Nerida has held several roles in clubs, pubs and has even spent some time working on Daydream Island. For the past 11 years, Nerida has worked as a Supervisor at Tuncurry Beach Bowling and still does some casual work there.

Nerida鈥檚 role at 黑料不打烊 is 2 fold as she has been an ACE Training Coordinator for the last 2 years and a Trainer/ Assessor for the last 5 years. Describing 黑料不打烊 Nerida feels very supported by all the staff at the Coast and other Trainers and everyone is always very welcoming to one another.

Trainer Nerida

Nerida said 鈥淎s I was someone that didn鈥檛 have any training experience whatsoever and had only completed my TAE, I applied for a Hospitality Trainer job at 黑料不打烊 which was called WEA Coast at the time. The Senior Education Officer had asked me in for an interview and they offered me a casual position and supported and guided me through my teaching journey to be the trainer that I am today.鈥

Ricki-Lee Paul recently completed her Certificate III in Hospitality at 黑料不打烊, a course she was encouraged to take by her current employer as they saw potential in her and wanted to see her further her knowledge and skills in the industry. 鈥淢y job provider got me into the course with 黑料不打烊, and as soon as I started I formed a great relationship with the trainers. They were great with me and they gave me all the support I needed to complete the course.鈥

Ricki-Lee found studying with 黑料不打烊 really good as she enjoyed that when she had a question about something, she got a straight-up, to-the-point answer that she could understand. Ricki-Lee explained that she鈥檚 a very hands-on learner, so the way the course was delivered by the trainers was great for her. She also felt very comfortable learning in a smaller group at the college.

“I’m a very hands on learner so the PRACTICAL way the course was delivered was great for me.”

Ricki-Lee loves being in the kitchen and actually wants to learn more about cooking, she said 鈥淚 wanted to be part of the service industry in some way, but as I am quite a shy person, I thought it would be a great opportunity to work in back of house. I really enjoy cooking and being able to cook for other people and show them what I can do. I love learning about food and how to make new recipes.鈥

The Certificate III in Hospitality course introduced Ricki-Lee to topics such as communicating with the customers and learning how to be a barista. Because of her newfound skills she now sometimes goes out to the front of house to serve customers their food, something she wouldn鈥檛 have done before, but since completing the course she feels it鈥檚 given her the confidence to do it.

Ricki-Lee is extremely passionate about playing community soccer, in fact, she 鈥淟OVES it! Soccer is my life鈥 she said. But when Ricki-Lee isn鈥檛 on the field kicking goals, she鈥檚 setting career goals on becoming permanent in the kitchen where she works now, giving her more job security. She feels that this is so much more attainable now that she has completed her training as she has gained further skills to provide that.

Quillisa Richardson loves sharing her 22 years of massage therapy experience with her students at 黑料不打烊. As a trainer for the HLT52015 Diploma of Remedial Massage, Quillisa enjoys the smaller classes and community feel where you get to know the students on an individual basis for an engaged learning environment.

She often tailors content delivery in class to make it more relatable to the students. 鈥淲e may be focusing on rehab for broken bones and I will ask the students to discuss any personal experiences with this. I find that it鈥檚 a more fun and inclusive way of interpreting content,鈥 Quillisa said.

She enjoys seeing students have that lightbulb moment when they understand content and build confidence in their ability to apply this knowledge to the practical components of the course.

As someone who has experienced injury and nerve pain in both sporting activities and at work, Quillisa has found respite in remedial massage and natural therapy for her treatment. This has grown her interest and passion in this area where she has studied a Diploma of Massage Therapy, Diploma of Natural Therapy and Diploma of Sports Therapy at the ACT College of Natural Therapies.

In addition to working as a trainer, Quillisa also runs her own remedial massage business and benefits from the flexibility and lifestyle balance that comes along with this.

She believes that the Diploma qualification offers students the skills and real world experience to work successfully as a Remedial Massage Therapist after completion and is proud that all of her 2020 alumni have now gained industry employment.

Providing education in responding to emergency situations is an integral part of being a First Aid Trainer. Simone Waters currently trains students in the First Aid accredited courses, as well as the newly introduced topic specific Seniors First Aid and Parents聽First聽Aid courses at 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Tuncurry campus.

As a young child growing up in rural NSW, Simone鈥檚 parents encouraged her to do a First Aid course to be better prepared for unexpected situations in the outback such as handling snake bites and broken bone injuries. This introduction highlighted the value of First Aid training and has set the path for continued self-development in this area for the years that followed.

In addition to being a First Aid trainer, Simone is also a lifeguard and swim instructor at the Great Lakes YMCA.聽 鈥淚鈥檝e been doing first aid training for over four years, I love sharing my knowledge in this area and have always had a willingness to help people,鈥 she said.

She understands the responsibility behind her role in educating students on how to effectively manage emergency situations. 鈥淔irst aid assistance is often required in the first minutes after sudden illness or injury occurs, even a simple act like changing a person鈥檚 head position for airway can save a life in the unfortunate event of any emergency,鈥 she said.

As with many courses over the past few months, there have been adjustments made to the content delivery in order to remain compliant around COVID-19 restrictions. 鈥淲e are running classes through blended learning in which practical components are a maximum of two students per session and all theoretical content is completed online,鈥 she said.

Simone believes that first aid practitioners are valuable assets to have in any workplace. 鈥淥ur first aid courses provide useful upskilling that would be sought after in many roles including in the community service sector,鈥 she said.

Deborah Mercer is committed to assisting students in unlocking their potential through her role as a trainer for Disability and Aged Care qualifications at 黑料不打烊. She has built strong relationships with various Aged Care facilities and Disability organisations across Newcastle and the Hunter which has allowed her to organise real world teaching experiences for students.

鈥淚 am proud to work for an organisation that provides quality education with a focus on practical on-the-job experiences to ensure industry readiness,鈥 she said.

Deborah discovered her passion for the community service and aged care sector during her long standing nursing career which led her to educating for the past 15 years. She began her role at 黑料不打烊 in 2018 and since then has implemented interactive learning methods into her classes, to ensure students remain engaged during their educational journey. Deborah was recognised for her efforts at the 2020 Adult Learners Week Awards by winning the Alan Melling Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to the organisation in the field of Aged Care and Health.

鈥淢y job as a trainer is to ensure that my delivery is engaging yet flexible and to focus on ways to inspire students to be the best version of themselves,鈥 she said.

An example of this is when Deborah trains her students in the subject of Dementia, she works with them to organise a High Tea for the residents of RFBI Kurri Kurri Masonic Village. This allows the students to interact with residents and teaches them behaviour management strategies and communication skills in an interactive and rewarding way. The feedback from the students after this activity is always positive and is a reflection of Deborah’s level of passion for educating others in the industry that she loves.

With the switch to online learning during COVID-19 restrictions, Deborah has proved her ability to be dynamic in her teaching style and is always looking for ways to improve her knowledge, skills and training delivery.

鈥淭he pandemic has brought many challenges to the way we educate, especially in my industry. I am grateful that as an organisation we were able to put plans in place for our students to continue their studies online as we worked towards the successful return back to the classroom,鈥 she said.

As 黑料不打烊 remains flexible in its delivery around the pandemic, Deborah maintains a high level of standard in ensuring students are supported and engaged whether they are in class or online.

As the fastest growing industry in the Mid North Coast Region, Aged Care has become one of the most popular areas to study at 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Tuncurry campus. For Jody Turner, her decision to undertake the CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) was a natural step as she has always been passionate about helping others.

Prior to the course, Jody owned a Horse Riding School in Far North Queensland which regularly assisted people with disabilities to experience the exhilaration and empowerment that horse riding provides.

She started her course in April 2019 and was able to balance family, study, work placement and RFS volunteering during the 2019/2020 bushfire season all whilst completing her course ahead of schedule in February 2020. She attributed her success during course to the professional yet approachable manner of her course trainer.

鈥淢y trainer was such a great support in helping me to achieve my goal of fast tracking my course, she was so down to earth and has even supported me after course too,鈥 she said.

During her course, Jody was also presented with a Local Heroes Award along with fellow volunteers at the Halliday鈥檚 Point Australia Day ceremony for their contribution to the bushfire effort.

As with many of 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Community Services courses, the CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) provides both theoretical and practical work placement to ensure that students are well equipped in real life situations after completion.

Jody undertook her work experience at Estia Tuncurry Aged Care Facility and was offered a casual position before completing her placement. Post-graduation, she was offered a permanent part time role as an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) and most recently a second permanent part time role as a Physiotherapy Aid. 鈥淭he course has helped me a lot in my jobs and given me the knowledge to think on my feet on a day to day basis,鈥 she said.

In terms of future plans, Jody feels motivated in continuing to study and develop her skillset over the coming months. She has plans to complete the other specialisation within her CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support, which is Disability and would also like to undertake a Medication Skillset both of which are offered at 黑料不打烊鈥檚 Tuncurry campus.
